A PANAMA FOREST AND SHORE

by Burton L. Gordon, Ph.D 1982, 6x9, 178 pp., cloth, $15.00, ISBN: 0-910286-88-4
THIS in-depth study merits the attention of anyone concerned with tropical rainforests, ecology, or anthropology. Although the devastating consequences of tropical deforestation are now widely recognized, efforts to slow the damage are in disorder. Any program for tropical forest protection has to proceed on a site-by-site basis, but this careful study illustrates principles that apply to rainforests everywhere: The once widespread forest-saving system of the native inhabitants of Boca del Toro Province in Panama. Intensely organic, these land use practices incorporate biorhythms and changing populations as well as weather. No other human system preserves rainforest diversity so well. While this system can be greatly improved with more scientific methods, much can be learned from it. Many photos, charts, and diagrams.
