THE STORY OF JOHN ELLIS traces the development of the science of zoology in
the eighteenth century. It follows the life work of John Ellis in his many
roles: family man, businessman, King's Agent, Colonial Agent, Fellow of the
Royal Society of London, and, most notably, the naturalist who took center
stage in the scientific debate over the animal nature of zoophytes. Ellis's
book on corallines was one of the most detailed accounts of any main group of
invertebrates that the world had yet seen. He ranks among those who led science
away from superficial, well-heeled dilettantes. Groner and Cornelius provide
adequate documentation to prove that the work of John Ellis is worthy of recognition
by all who appreciate the quest for scientific knowledge.
