The News and Courier, Charleston, South Carolina, Friday Morning, May 27, 1949
Rosen Proved America Offers Opportunity for Industrious
Sam Rosen, retired merchant, of 55 Montagu street, who died Wednesday
morning in a local infirmiry, was a iilustetion of the opportunities which
America affords the industrious and the persevering.
A native of Chansy, in the Russian Ukraine, Mr. Rosen came to the United
States about 1907. He was 19 years old and had 32 cents in his pocket. He
proceeded to Poughkeepsie, N. Y. where he went to work at $9 a week in a screw
and bolt factory.
Resolving to live on half of what he earned, he accumulated $400. Meanwhile,
Miss Bessie Lehrman, to whom he had been betrothed in Russia, joined him. About
this time, Mr. Rosen embarked on a Clyde ship for Charleston, bringing his bank
passbook with him.
With his bank book he went to S. Hirschmann, wholesale merchant, and told
him he wanted to go into business. Mr. Hirschmann suggested he become a peddler
and took him to M. Hornik & Co. On the basis of his bank book, Mr. Hornik gave
him a suitcase full of pins, buttons, needles, and fleece underwear and
suggested he go to Christ Church parish.
After developing a good trade, he bought a horse and wagon. He painted the
wagon green and put this sigh on it: "New York Up-to-Date Bargain House".
Shortly thereafter, he contracted malaria and was put up by James Pepper, who
resided at Pepper's now called Ten Mile. Mrs. Rosen came down to nurse him and
Mr. Pepper persuaded him to go into business in a vacant store there. His first
son, Louis, now practicing law in Orangeburg, was born there.
Later, Mr. Rosen purchased a tract of land at Fifteen mile for $1,200 and
moved his store there. There his daughter, Mrs Kate Rosen, now of Savannah, and
his second son, Nathan, master in equity here, were born.
Because of poor transportation and lack of educational facilities for his
children, he bought a store at 181 King street, which Mrs. Rosen operated until
he sold the farm for $5,000. It was here that his youngest son, Dr. Jack Rosen,
Charleston dentist, was born.
About 1920, he went into the grocery business at Meeting and Lee streets.
About that time he invested in a number of lots and built 10 houses on Williman
street, which he rented.
He built one house and got another framed. He then borrowed enough money to
finish the second house, after which he started another. Much of the work on the
houses he did himself.
Mr. Rosen's driving ambition was to educate his children. Graduation day was
a great day in the Rosen household and all his sons are now professional men.
Mr. Rosen volunteered for service in World War I, but was turned down
because of his physical condition. Louis served in the navy in the Pacific area
in World WarII, coming out a lieutenant commander, and Dr. Jack Rosen was in the
army in Germany, coming out as a major.
Surviving besides his widow and children, are three sisters, Mrs. William
Feldman and Mrs. Ella Gelson, both of Charleston, and Mrs. Ben Solomon, of
Moncks Corner, and two brothers, Sol L. Rosen and William Rosen, both of
Charleston.
Funeral services were held at Stuhr's chapel Wednesday afternoon, conducted
by Rabbi Allan Tarshish, of Beth Israel synagogue. Burial was in K.K. Beth
Israel cemetery.

From Leon Feldman: When Bill and Gussie Feldman first came south, they went to
Yonges Island. There, a family named Geraty befriended them and did all they
could to make them happy. Gussie was totally unhappy, and eventually they went
back to Poughkeepsie. Sam and Sol remained in Charleston. Sol wanted to have
them return to Charleston, and Mrs. Breibart told him that she would help make
Gussie happy if he could get them back. Work was very hard to get at that time,
and Sol told Bill that he could get him a job at the Navy Yard making big money.
So Bill and Gussie came back to Charleston. There was no work at the Navy Yard.
Thus he opened a store or bought one from a Mr. Echmeyer. In June 1922 he built
the store at 1085 Meeting Street.
