  From Best to Least Best:
My Ramones Album Rankings
By Jim Peoples

Since 1982, the Ramones have been my favorite band. Recently, I got a wild hair and sat down in front of the computer. A few hours later, I had done it. I had ranked their studio albums from best to least best. In my humble opinion, they are:

1. END OF THE CENTURY
The best songwriting of any album. Many have complained of Phil Spector's production, but I believe he gave their sound the grandeur and depth it always deserved. This album still gives me goosebumps.

2. ROAD TO RUIN
Solid songwriting and a sound that is straight forward and intense. This album offers a little bit of everything, from the country-tinged "Questioningly" to the flat-out aggression of "Go Mental", "I'm Against It", and "Bad Brain".  Produced by Tommy Erdelyi (a.k.a. Tommy Ramone) and Ed Stasium, Road To Ruin was a giant leap forward.

3. RAMONES
The album which started it all. Despite the simplistic lyrics and production, this album best conveys the pure power of the Ramones. Three chords have never been so fun.

4. ROCKET TO RUSSIA
"Rockaway Beach", my favorite Ramones song, is found on this album. Nothing fancy here, just more of the same simple, straight forward songs found on their first two albums. Excellent production and great songwriting.

5. LEAVE HOME
Essentially "Ramones Pt. 2", Leave Home offers much of the same type of songs found on their first album. Fortunately, the production is much improved, with generous use of reverb and vocal harmonies. For a special treat, find an original version with the song "Carbona Not Glue", one of the best songs they ever recorded.

6. PLEASANT DREAMS
The most underrated Ramones album. I believe the reason many did not like this album is because it was at least 10 years ahead of its time. Superb songwriting. Graham Gouldman's much-lamented production gave the Ramones a modern sound which many fans did not care for. I happen to love it.

7. SUBTERRANEAN JUNGLE
Another underrated album. Many songs have a "pop" sound not usually associated with The Ramones. This is not, however, a bad thing. Like Pleasant Dreams, I think this album was a bit ahead of its time. The production gives the album the most unique and identifiable sound of any Ramones album.

8. TOO TOUGH TO DIE
Often compared to Road to Ruin, this album offers both punk ("Warthog", "Endless Vacation") and new wave ("Howling at the Moon"). However, the songwriting is not as solid as Road to Ruin. "Humankind" and "Planet Earth 1988" are among the worst songs on any album.

9. MONDO BIZARRO
This album is a mixture of greatness and garbage. Among the greatness: "Censorshit", "Strength to Endure", and "Main Man". The garbage includes "Anxiety", "Take It As It Comes", and "It's Gonna Be Alright". Not a terrible album, just inconsistent.

10. ADIOS AMIGOS
For their final studio album, I was hoping for better. Much like Mondo Bizzaro, it is full of songs which are either very good or very bad. I happen to think "I Don't Want to Grow Up", "Makin Monsters For My Friends", "Scattergun", "Got Alot To Say", and "Born To Die In Berlin" are the good songs. The others don't do much for me.

11. ACID EATERS
The only reason this album isn't in the top two or three is that, unfortunately, the Ramones didn't write any of the songs. Nevertheless, it is an excellent example of the "true" Ramones sound. Bassist C.J. shows why it is difficult to miss Dee Dee. Best played very loud. The Japanese version has a bonus song, "Surfin' Safari," which is great.

12. ANIMAL BOY
Animal Boy is a solid album, even though it features synthesizers and acoustic guitars on a number of songs. It features one of The Ramones finest songs, "My Brain is Hanging Upside Down (Bonzo Goes to Bitburg)". The greatest flaw of the album is the sound of Johnny's guitar; which I think it is the worst of any album.

13. BRAIN DRAIN
Brain Drain is another of a handful of Ramones albums which are very inconsistent. Among the good songs are "I Believe in Miracles", "Palisades Park", "Ignorance is Bliss", and "Merry Christmas (I Don't Wanna Fight Tonight)". This is the last album featuring Dee Dee as a member of the band.

14. HALFWAY TO SANITY
Even as number 14 on my list, this album is still better than 90% of the crap out there today. It features a few very good songs, including "I Wanna Live", "Bop 'Till You Drop", and "Garden of Serenity", It also features what I believe is the worst song the Ramones ever recorded: "I'm Not Jesus".
