In general and if eligible, The ROTH is better for savings than is the Traditional Regular IRA unless a tax deduction is needed. The ROTH is a benefit-related savings program while the Traditional IRA is a tax-related savings program. The following compares the two with the long term benefits of each being obvious: Table of Traditional IRA ROTH contributions, like deposits to a regular savings account, are not tax deductible yet all contributions, whenever withdrawn, are free of all Federal income and penalty taxes. There is no required 5 year or other holding period. All ROTH earnings withdrawn after 5 years and age 59 ½ are free of Federal income and penalty taxes.
