Coastwind Sires of Significance

SBIS Ch. Coastwind Abraxas
(Ch. Coastwind Nepenthe ex Ch. Coastwind Ouija)
Ch. Coastwind Abraxas

The sire of over 75 American champions, several of whom were S.B.I.S., All-Breed B.I.S. or Group winners, Abraxas captured the imagination of the fancy and broke the siring record of the great Ch. Shirkhan of Grandeur--a record that had stood for almost twenty years. Abraxas, himself, was a S.B.I.S. winner from the BBE class (A.H.C.C.) at eighteen months of age, followed by several Group firsts and culminating in going B.I.S. at the National Specialty, following in the footsteps of his grand sire, Ch. Coastwind Gazebo. His siring record spanned that period in Afghan history where the entries and point systems were the highest ever and stood for over fifteen years. Based on numbers of dogs defeated to gain their title from the A.K.C. point system at the time, he remains top sire of all time.

Ch. Coastwind Jubilan Osiris
(Ch. Coastwind Obsidian ex Ch. Coastwind Axplosion)
Ch. Coastwind Jubilan Osiris

"Buster", as he was known, was the sire of over 65 American champions, including many S.B.I.S. and Group winners. Sired by a Nepenthe son and out of an Abraxas daughter, he consistently passed on the quality of his gene pool to his offspring. The pre-potency of the male line and its producing ability is seen in the double Buster grandson, Jubilan's Octagon, the current sire of many American champions.

SBIS Ch. Coastwind Yev Rah Amid
(Ch. Coastwind Phobos ex Coastwind Silk Stockings)

Nicknamed "Dick" by the young family who raised him as part of their household, this S.B.I.S. grandson of the top producer, Abraxas, returned to Coastwind to show and finished in record time in large California major shows, while the point system was still at its peak. A Group Winner, he sired over 40 American champions, and when bred to Ch. Mahali Chelsea Morning produced a litter of nine champions.

SBIS Ch. Coastwind Gazebo
(Akaba's Allah Kazam ex Ch. Shaadar's Blajnhe of Karlyle)

The great Gazebo, or "Ezra" as he was popularly known, was from the first litter whelped at Coastwind and became a cornerstone for what was to become a string of pre-potent sires. His own sire, Allah, was a littermate to the famous Group and National Specialty Winner, Ch. Akaba's Sterling Silver, himself a top sire, and Westminster Hound Group and S.B.I.S. winner, Ch. Akaba's Blue Devil. Ezra sired 34 American champions. His two most famous offspring were B.I.S. Ch. Sandina's Starstream, top Afghan for 1974 and winner of 14 B.I.S., and Ch. Coastwind Ouija (dam of Abraxas) who finished at the age of 15 months with three consecutive five point majors in l970's West Coast competition.

SBIS Ch. Coastwind Obsidian
(Ch. Coastwind Nepenthe ex Zardin's Zybele of Infashia)

Obsidian had a siring and showing career that spanned Europe as well as the US. Finishing in this country with S.B.I.S. and Group wins, "T.V." culminated his ring presence here with an All-Breed B.I.S. at the prestigious Ventura Kennel Club. He was then exported to Germany to the famous Koschar wa Chasis kennels of Ute Lauschke where he finished his International title and became a powerful stud force in Europe. After a six year absence he returned to the U.S. and was still able to attain Sire of Significance status with over 15 American champions.

Aust. SBIS Ch. Coastwind Holy Man
(Akaba's Geronimo Blue ex Ch. Coastwind Serendipity)

Although Holy Man ("Moses") was exported to the famous Fermoy Kennels of David Roche in Australia and spent his life there, from our point of view it is fitting to include him as a Sire of Significance. He is from one of the most important breedings in our kennel history and exemplifies once more the strength of the Coastwind male line.

Moses was bred sparingly and from only ten litters sired 35 champions producing more Specialty and Royal* Challenge winning stock than any other sire in Australian history. His daughter, Ch. Dzum Pollyana, created breed history by winning three consecutive Royal B.I.S. And she was but one of twelve champions from the same combination of Moses to Ch. Emir Dzum Dhamma Pada, foundation bitch of Dzum Kennels. Another multiple All Breed B.I.S. winning daughter, Ch. Fermoy Hey Look Me Over, was the top Afghan in the nation in l980 and the Australian Sighthound of the Year. Her brother, Ch. Fermoy Holy Knight was also a multiple Specialty, Royal Group and All Breed B.I.S. winner. Another notable littermate trio sired by Holy Man: Ch. Alaqadar De Fauves, a Royal Show, Specialty and Group winner; and Chs. Alaqadar Chiaroscuro and Arabesque--both multiple Group and All Breed B.I.S. winners.

Holy Man's bloodline is behind most of the top winning and producing dogs in Australia and his impact is still being seen in that country today. Recently the U.S. has had the rare opportunity to see one of his descendants in the spectacular B.I.S. Aust. Amer. Ch. Tahkira Hell Raiser.

* For those in the U.S. not familiar with "Royal" shows in Australia: A Royal show in the U.S. might be a combination of Westminster coupled with a state fair. The dog entries are about 7,000. The show might run 10 days. They are huge national events that include competition in livestock, poultry and agriculture.

Footnote: The current dogs in Coastwind Kennels incorporate all of these top sires as well as other important Coastwind dogs who were significant sires in terms of their contributions to this family of Afghan Hounds.
