A Coastwind Scrapbook
This section is devoted to a variety of photgraphs that have special significance
to us. It will be revised from time to time, not necessarily showing our dogs, but
sharing with the public what we hope you will find interesting afghan memorabilia.
Some of the photos may be familiar to you, others have never been published.
A rarely seen photo of some young Coastwind hounds enjoying an informal coursing
practice in an alfalfa field somewhere in the Sacramento Valley. This was taken
in the early 1970's. In the foreground is a young Ch. Coastwind Nepenthe (before his title).
His littermates, Hermit and Passionella are in the background. The red saluki is
Coastwind Mista of Abu Shehr with two of his littermates.
This is a candid photo of Coastwind Ouija and her littermates on a coursing excursion
of their own. Caught on camera in mid-air, Ouija already displays the spunk that helped
finish her title at the age of 15 months with three consecutive five point majors
from the bred by class in tough West Coast competition.
One of the few pictures of Akaba's Geronimo Blue (at about one year old) taken before
he was lost in Lois Boardman's tragic kennel fire. Geronimo produced only one litter
before his death. It was our good fortune to have bred him to Ch. Coastwind Serendipity
before Lois left California for Chicago. The litter became one of our most important.
Akaba's Royal Blue at about 12 months with Lois Boardman at her kennel in Calabasas.
One of the most influential stud dogs in Afghan history, never bred outside of the
Akaba Kennels, and whose impact is still felt in the current Coastwind pedigrees.
Ch. Coastwind Nepenthe pictured here at twelve months of age. This son of Akaba's
Geronimo Blue and Ch. Coastwind Serendipity became a major force in our breeding
program and continued to perpetuate the strength of the Coastwind male line.
Ch. Coastwind Ouija at twelve months after winning her second five point major at
the A.H.C.C. Her sister, Ch. Coastwind Kharlotta, seen to her left, finished in the
following year.
A never before published photo of Gazebo's sister, Ch. Coastwind Serendipity.
Shown here, by Mike Dunham, winning Best of Breed from the 6-9 month puppy class
over top Specials under Mr. Ellsworth Gamble.
We have had many requests for a photo of this bitch, Ch. Coastwind Blue Hen. She was
Jacoranda's niece (Ch. Coastwind Kohoteck ex Coastwind Ajuga) and was a favorite of many,
ourselves included.
This famous photograph taken in the 1940's is of Louise Carwithen Snyder and two of her
Windtryst hounds plays a part in Coastwind history. Mrs. Snyder helped launch Gazebo's
career in 1969 when she gave him BIS at the National Specialty, then held every year in
the ballroom of New York's Statler Hilton Hotel, one week after he had gone BIS at Beverly
Hills under Derek Rayne. We received this picture years later after Mrs. Snyder's death,
as a momento from her daughter. It is one of the most valued pieces of our afghan memorabilia.
