Angie W's readers to go along with Sonlight-5 These are the books I had my 11yo read in addition to the SL5 readers. It's not as comprehensive as the list that Rose posted, http://www.sonlight-forums.com/showthread.php?postid=125231#poststop, but a lot of the books that she listed weren't available at my library. *** Zia (O'Dell) - This is a sequel to Island of the Blue Dolphins. Stowaway (Hesse) - This is an excellent book. I had a lot of fun with it. It tells a fictional story about a boy who stows away on Capt. Cook's voyage around the world. Although it is a fictional story, it covers all the facts of the voyage. We watched a documentary about Capt. Cook and were surprised at how much of the book was real. *** Ghost in the Tokaido Inn (Hoobler) - This is NOT a ghost story. A merchant's son tries to solve the mystery of a stolen jewel. This was a great book. So Far from the Bamboo Grove (Watkins) A fictionalized autobio- graphical account of the author's flight from Korea to Japan at the end of WWII. The Enchanted Forest Chronicles (Wrede) This is an excellent series of four books combined in one volume. My oldest and I have both read it and my younger two have listened to the books on tape many many many times now. This was a just-for-fun addition to the readers. The Remarkable Journey of Prince Jen (Alexander) This is a fantasy novel, but the culture is Asian. My dd enjoyed it. I don't usually care much for Lloyd Alexander. Spring Pearl (Yep) This is a Girls of Many Lands book. After Spring Pearl's parents die, she goes to live with another family. Set during the Opium Wars. I had never heard of the Opium Wars before reading this book. Kite Rider (McCaughrean) A boy in 1800's China rides kites for money. This was an excellent book. Tales of a Chinese Grandmother (Carpenter) Very similar to Tales of a Korean Grandmother, just set in a different culture. Eragon (Paolini) My dd read this just for fun and actually got to meet the author at a book-signing. I Rode a Horse of Milk-white Jade (Wilson) Oyuna takes her brother's place in the army for Kublai Khan. The story is very similar to Mulan. *** Leo Tolstoy's Collected Short Stories (Tolstoy) Very readable collection of short stories. Anastasia's Album (Brewster) This is a scrapbook version of Anastasia's life. Very well done. *** Water Buffalo Days (Huynh) I had my dd read this in addition to The Land I Lost by the same author. The Clay Marble (Ho) A 12yo girl gets separated from her family in a refugee camp in Cambodia. *** The Jungle Book I (Kipling) Everybody needs to know these stories. Neela (Divakaruni) Girls of Many Lands series. 12yo Neela tries to find her father after he disappears during a demonstration against the British occupation. Homeless Bird (Whelan) 13yo Koly suffers through a bad arranged marriage and then must try to put her life back together. Leyla (Croutier) Girls of Many Lands series. Leyla tries to help her family and ends up as a harem slave in Turkey. *** Safari Journal (Talbott) This is mainly for fun, but does have some African cultural information. Thunder Cave (Smith) This was an excellent book, but does have some Masai spiritual content so you will probably want to pre-read this one. After his mother's accidental death, 14yo Jacob travels to Kenya to find his father who is hiding out in the bush trying to keep poachers from getting to the elephant herd he's been studying.
