Habitats within the

Big Creek State Marine Reserve

Description of the marine reserve

The UC Santa Cruz research diving certification class dives in the Big Creek State Marine Reserve once or twice each year. Here are some photos:

Diver's view of Big Creek bridge (L). Wrestling with quadrat in kelp (R). 6-12-01

Seastar near cove (L). Working along transect tape (R). 6-12-01

Kelp along transect (L) and quadrat ready to count (R) 6-12-01

Photos from June 2002 class. Course instructors are proposing to install a permanent transect line to enhance repeatability and monitoring value of the transect results 6-13-02.

The water was fairly clear but not quite as clear as in 2001 (see above). Comparing photos, there was less giant kelp (Macrocystis) on the surface this year. 6-13-02
