WORKING RELATIONSHIP

OK. I've decided I want to put information on the WWW, that I need some help to do so, and that you may just be the right person to help me. What kinds of working relationships can be established to enlist your service to assist in meeting my needs?

Good question. Here you will find that I am quite flexible. My basic philosophy is to do what I can to empower you (or your employees) to do as much of the work of creating and maintaining your web pages and web site as you choose to do. This frees me to focus my skills where they are truly needed, making my work less tedious and more enjoyable , and reducing your costs to produce and maintain your web presence as much as possible.

I work very fast, and I do quality work. Also, I know what my abilities are, where my expertise is, and where that expertise falls short. I won't take on tasks for which I don't personally have the required expertise or have access to good people with the required talents.

Kinds of Working Relationships?

Contractor. You have a job you want done. I can assess what it will take and provide a proposal for doing it, an estimate of what it will cost, and schedule for when it will be done.

Consultant/Contractor. I help you decide what you need and provide various options for meeting those needs then implement the option you choose . These options can involve using you or others designated by you for doing various parts of the work required. I can do parts of the work, manage and oversee other parts and provide guidance and expertise where needed.

Consultant. Here I can serve you in a number of ways. I can assist in determining your requirements so that you have a running start in dealing with Commercial Web Page Design firms.
I can assist in evaluating proposals from such firms to ensure they meet your technical requirements and to help determine whether they are qualified to do what they propose based on their past performance.
I can participate on your behalf in reviews and feedback sessions to assure that their work is indeed giving you what you asked for and need.
I can assist you or your own web page developers with any problems or question areas. In addition, I can provide options and advice regarding page or site layout and how best to approach major changes.
I can build rapid prototypes for new pages that you refine and finish, or can refine and finish such pages per your decisions and feedback.
I can review pages at your site and offer suggestions for improvements , guidance for how best to make those improvements, samples of how to implement that guidance, or finished pages that implement that guidance depending on your specific needs.

Consultant/Trainer. Here I can teach you (or your people) what you need to know to create and maintain a presense on the WWW that meets your unique needs.

So, we have several working relationships from which to choose. My preference is to work with you as part of your team. But, I can work for you as a contractor, just as well.

What kind of working relationship best meets your needs? If you just want the job done and don't want to deal with the mechanics and don't have people working with/for you to provide these services, then you are looking for a contractor. If you are a company, and one of your main objectives is business over the internet, you might want to employ a consultant to look after your best interests from a technical standpoint when dealing with Web Design firms who have the specific skills/talents/capabilities related to conducting business on the WWW.
If you are building an information focused site, the various consultant options are better suited to meet your needs -- from Contractor/Consultant if you want little involvement to Consultant or Consultant/Trainer if you or your people are to do a great deal of the work.

How much will it cost me?

Typical Page Design rates are from $20-$100+ / hour. Junior web page builders can be hired for $30-35K. The Webmaster within a major company responsible for that company's website plus managing the web page builder/maintainer staff can make $75K plus. How many people you will need or how many hours is highly dependent on your specific needs.
If you don't have enough work to support a full-time position, you have two options: making it a part time job for someone or hiring out the work to a consultant.

My consulting rate is $54 per hour plus any travel related expenses that may be required to support meetings or on-site work at locations > 1 hour from where I live. [Monterey, CA]

If you are comfortable with computers and have a feel for arranging information, you can minimize the cost by doing the work yourself, or by hiring college students and junior people to do a lot of the work. In many cases, the job market is such that the best such students can hope for is low skill, low paying jobs that are well beneath their abilities and talents. Take advantage of this resource. It is WIN/WIN. Further, it is of service to society as well since it provides real-world training.

Note: This will require a bit more management on your part, or on the part of a consultant since the students will usually require more guidance and direction to get the work done.
