Did you know that the native Americans are still being pushed off their land?
Yes even in the year 1997 ... we are almost at new millenium. What is with everyone? Why is this still happening?? I do not understand it!!! Why does our government allow this inhumanity and why do we allow our government the power to make these choices when most of us know how awful they are? I really do not get this??
For example...(quote are from our bulletin board so please check it out :)
"Our Government is going to force the Navajo off their land in the next few months because they wouldn't sign their land over to Coal companies. The deadline has passed and the evictions have begun. Most of the Traditionals are elders and know no other way to live except here on their land, as their ancestors did." (E.J) "it boils down to this: forcibly removing people from their ancestral sacred land in order to coal and uranium mine, estimated to be worth billions of dollars." (E.J)
And it gets worse ... not only are they making these people leave THEIR land but they are making them go to land that has been destroyed by a uranium spill. How can the government get away with this kind of treatment toward human beings????
"Public law 93-531 passed in 1974 requires partition of 3,000 sq miles of land and the removal of more than ten thousand Navajo people. The primary site for relocation, called the "new lands", near Sanders, Arizona, is downstream from the nation's largest known uranium spill. The spill occurred when a dam containing more than a hundred million gallons of radioactive water burst in July 1979. This area is still designated the primary site for relocation." (E.J)
Now this tells me that our government has absolutely NO respect for people's lives or for the earth. All it cares about is making a buck :( When is the value of people and respecting the earth going to mean more then Money??? I believe if we do not change this soon then we will have no earth left to respect or people left to value. I fear that when we see what we have done and want to change it, it will be too late.
"350 million of your tax dollars have gone so far to fund the dreams of politicians and energy corporations eager to rape the riches of northern Arizona. Only the presence of the Dineh on the Hopi Partitioned Land (HPL) is keeping the U.S. government from making good on it's promise to turn four corners into a "national sacrifice area".(E.J)
I do not know the answers to this most regretful situation. I just want to get the information out there so that we can change before it is to late. I feel we really need to get the urgency across to the people who are in charge of making these horrifying decisions of raping people of their land.
This is just one example; there is another....
"The people of a remote Indonesian island have been fighting a six year battle to save their forests - and their livelihoods - from destruction by logging companies. They have suffered brutality and repression for defending their lands. If the logging goes on, it could literally mean the death of their island. The situation is reaching crisis point. The people of Yamdena Island need your help - now."
Please go see more info and how you can help at EarthAction's web page: http://www.oneworld.org/earthaction/yamdena/alert_yamdena.html
And Another....
"The Shell oil corporation has blood on its hands, and a worldwide boycott of Shell products is under way. Two recent reports on the Shell subsidiary in Nigeria, Africa, have documented massive environmental destruction in the Niger River delta region, where Shell has spilled some 56 million gallons of oil onto farmlands and into community water supplies. The destroyed land and water formerly provided sustenance for an indigenous people, the Ogoni. A recent video confirms these reports of Shell's environmental abuse and mismanagement in Ogoniland.
But Shell's crimes are deeper still. When Ogoni activists organized to demand that Shell clean up spilled oil, and share oil profits more equitably with the Ogoni people, the Nigerian military dictatorship --with financial assistance, logistical support, and guns provided by Shell -- conducted a campaign of terror in which at least 1800 Ogoni people were murdered, some of them tortured to death."
And there are even more, that's what is so sad :( I do not understand why so much of this brutality is still going on??? Have we not learned a thing??? I really wonder if there is still hope with so much cruelty in this world?
I did not know about these things until recently. I did not know how much distruction is still going on. So, my guess is that most people do not know about these things either. So I am going to try to inform people of what is still being allowed in this world when we are supposed to be evolving into higher humanbeings. I do not think we are going to evolve until we figure out how we ought to be treating each other and this beautiful earth. I just hope we figure it out soon :)
