Bouyed by the success of the original models, Ford did a major redesign for the 1967 cars. The most dramatic design change was in the fastback where the fastback itself was extended fully to the rear of the body, giving a stockier appearance. On all of the body styles, coupes, convertibles, and fastbacks, the front grille now had both vertical and horizontal bars and the grille opening was enlarged. The non-functional side scoops were redesigned as two smaller scoops with inlets and were painted the same color as the body.

The 1967 model year was the final year for Fords 289 Hi-Po engine and the first year for the more powerful 320-hp 390-cid four valve V-8 and the ultimate muscle-car engine, the 428-cid.
Shelby took advantage of the larger engine bay of the 67 Mustang to build the new Shelby GT 500. The Shelby GT 350 continued to used the 289cid Hi-Po engine. External changes to the 1967 Shelby included a new grille with the high-beam headlights in the center and the Shelby emblem on the right side of the grille. To be "street legal" in some states required moving the high-beam to the outer edges of the grille.
The rear of the Shelby cars featured a new spoiler, taillights from the Mercury Cougar, and a Shelby gas cap. The GT 500 cars had a padded roll bar and the option of racing-style shoulder harnesses.
