New Generator

We have very good news for our customers. Our Monterey location now has a large generator that has been operational for three months. Our new generator has already supplied emergency power during at least one power outage and has been tested extensively - it is working flawlessly. This was a very important project for us and we want to thank Mary Ann Leffel of the Monterey County Economic Development Committee as well as our local neighbors for helping us get this project completed. Red Shift's Monterey location has always had battery backup power for short outages of course, but now we can continue to operate our entire facility, including air conditioners, phone systems - everything during outages of indefinite length. Our Salinas location is also backed up by a large onsite generator.

OC3 upgrades in Salinas and Monterey

Red Shift has completed extensive upgrades to our network in Monterey and Salinas. This involved a fiber upgrade project which we started eight months ago and completed in early July. We made a seamless backbone transition in moving our New Edge Networks feed in Monterey to Qwest because we felt the Qwest connection was a better performer. We also upgraded two DS3 circuits (45 Mbps each) with OC3 fiber links which are capable of speeds up to 145 Mbps. AT&T worked smoothly with us installing the new fiber lines. Our backbone feeds are performing very well and we have a lot of fiber capacity to work with for future growth.

DSL in More Cities

We've been hard at work with our DSL offerings too. Red Shift can now offer DSL in most cities in California (well over 90%) that are DSL ready. Red Shift will soon be able to offer DSL in cities where Qwest is the local telephone carrier. We are particularly interested in this because many of our agriculture business customers have remote offices and farms in Arizona. Red Shift has also finished the work necessary for offering DSL in Nevada along with California and Arizona.

Satellite Internet Feed

Our primary goal is to provide high-speed Internet to everyone in Monterey County, one way or another. We have put another piece of the plan into place in order to reach into areas that even our wireless services have not yet been able to penetrate. We have been negotiating with Hughes Satellite so that can offer Internet through Satellite receivers. Red Shift will be able to offer these services later in October. More details to follow in the next newsletter...
