1. What is e-mail?
E-mail is an abbreviation for an electronic message that is sent over a communications network from one user to another.
2. Can I get more than one e-mail address with my one Red Shift Account?
We allow 10 e-mail addresses per dial up account. The PPP login has an e-mail address and we allow nine additional e-mail only accounts free. If you require more e-mail addresses, they are available for per month. An e-mail only account does not enable the user to have dial-up access.
3. Can I include photographs, or sound and video files in my e-mail?
You can include any file that you would like in your e-mail messages as long as it is not greater than 10 MB. This is possible with the use of MIME, Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension. With this you can attach files to your messages and send them to whoever you would like.
4. I'm going to be traveling next week. How can I read my e-mail?
You can check your Red Shift e-mail from another ISP securely at the following URL: https://webmail.redshift.com.
5. How private is my e-mail?
Although millions of people use e-mail every day that does not mean that it is the most secure way to communicate. It can be compared to talking on your mobile phone, if someone is looking hard enough they may be able to find it. That is why it is recommended that you not include very personal or other data that you consider classified.
6. I keep receiving e-mail I don't want. How can I stop it?
What you are receiving is Spam or UCE, Unsolicited Commercial Email. Spammers can get your e-mail address from online forms that you fill out. Please read our Spam FAQ for more information.
7. I received an e-mail about a virus that I can get through reading my e-mail. Is this true?
The only way you can get a virus from an e-mail is if you knowingly run an executable, a program, or open a file that was attached to the e-mail.
8. How can I have all my e-mail delivered from one account to another?
To have your mail forwarded to another account, send a request to support@redshift.com. Red Shift charges $5.00 a month for mail forwarding. Make sure you include the e-mail address of the account you would like the mail forwarded to and the duration of the forward.
9. When I send someone an e-mail how long does it take them to receive it?
When you send mail it is almost instantaneous. After that how long it takes to get there depends on how the mail is delivered by the recipient's ISP. Many large online services like America Online and Prodigy queue their mail. What this means is that all mail messages that are delivered to their networks are held in a temporary storage bin until the server has time to deliver it to the person. If the mail server is very busy it can take days to deliver. On the other hand, sending mail to someone on another local ISP will happen almost immediately.
10. Sometimes when I try to send mail I get the error "Some of the recipients were rejected by your mail server". Why do I get this error message?
This error occurs when the e-mail address you are trying to send to does not exist. If you replied to an e-mail and received this message, this means that their "reply to address" is wrong in their mail program configuration. You will have to manually enter their e-mail address if you know it in order to send the message. You may want to inform them that their reply to address is incorrect.
11. Sometimes when I try to send mail I get the error "Relaying Denied". Why do I get this error message?
This error occurs when someone is trying to user our smtp server but are not using Red Shift Internet Services for connectivity when sending the email. We do not allow relay through our mail server to anyone outside of the Red Shift network.
12. Why are the dates and times wrong on some of the e-mail messages I receive?
The date and time of an e-mail message is set by the sender's computer. If the person that sent you the e-mail message had their date set to January 1, 2000 and their clock set to 8:00PM, the e-mail message would say it was sent on January 1, 2000 at 8:00PM.
