1. Why should I register a domain name?
A domain name will reserve ownership of a name that can be applied to personalize email, attached to a web and or e-commerce site and acts as a brand or title that you own. Rather than having a generic email address that only promotes the Internet service provider, a domain name will personalize both your email and acts as the address of your web site.

2. Do domain names come attached to a website?

3. Are there additional costs to registering a domain name?
There are no additional costs for registration. Registration means that you own the domain. If you want to use it for web hosting please see next question.

4. I want to attach my domain name to a web site?
Call (831) 655-8710 or email support@redshift.com. If you host with Red Shift the $39.95 DNS setup fee will be waived. The monthly hosting fee is $29.95. This includes mail and dns hosting.

6. Is there a maximum and minimum length that a domain name can be?
The minimum amount of fields is 1; there is no maximum although most domain names are ten to twenty-five fields long. Each domain name is separated by a period called a "dot". The right side of the "dot" is called the "top level domain." Popular top level domains include .com, .net, .org etc… The information to the left of the dot is called the "second-level domain". "Redshift" is the second level domain and the ".com" is the top-level domain.

7. Are domain names ending in .com, .net and .org used globally?
Yes. These top-level domains are recognized and can be registered by users all over the globe.

8. How long after I register will the domain name be ready to use?
The WHOIS record should be updated within 24 hours of registration. To check the Whois record on your name please follow this link: http://www.networksolutions.com/cgi-bin/whois/whois Once the record shows that you own the name you may call to add additional services.

9. What is the difference between domain names ending in .com, .net and .org?
Domain names ending in ".com" are used for registering commercial entities. Anyone in the world can register a .com Domain names ending ".net" have historically been designated for organizations that are directly involved in Internet operations. Currently businesses are registering domain names ending in .net when their original desired name ending in .com is already registered. The top-level domain .org is used to identify miscellaneous sites and non-profit organizations.
