Can't Get DSL? Try Wireless
Home Networking Essentials
- When you want to hook up more than one computer to your DSL modem, you need a network.
- You must first decide two things about your network: 1) Are you going to use Red Shift supplied IPs or a router to create your own? 2) Are you going to run wires to each PC or use a non-wired solution (such as wireless or powerline adapters)
- You either need an IP for each PC or you need a router that will create additional IPs for you, such as a "wireless router" or a "DSL router". Using extra IPs is the easiest way to setup a home network, but using a DSL router or wireless router will also work.
- If you can you run wires to each PC, or they are already in place then you will only need to buy one of the following two items setup your network:: 1) 8 port (or larger) switch if you're using Red Shift IPs or, 2) a DSL router if you need to create IPs on your network.
- If you cannot, or do not want to run wires then you have two options: 1) Wireless - you need to buy a wireless router, plus a receiver for each PC. 2) Powerline - you need to buy one for each PC, including the DSL modem. Powerline will work by itself if you have Red Shift IPs, or with a DSL router if you wish to create your own IPs on your network.

8 Port Switch use with Red Shift IPs |
Use when you can run wires to each of your computers. This is a very stable and reliable method of networking, but putting in the wires may prove difficult. You need 1 IP per computer, or you will need a router if you wish to create your own IPs on your network. |

| Powerline Adapters |
When you do not wish to run wires or when wireless is not a good option. This is best when wireless would have to penetrate too many walls or you have other wireless devices such as phones, security systems, etc. You need one for each computer you setup and one for the DSL modem. A 2 PC network for example would require 3 powerline adapters. Powerline adapters have to be reset every 2-4 weeks, which simply involves removing them from the socket for 10 seconds and re-inserting them. |
$69 |
| Wireless Router |
A good solution when you do not wish to run wires, and the wireless won't interfere with your phone or other devices. Wireless won't go through more than 3 walls typically, so If you have a long distance to go, run wires or use powerline. If you go with wireless you will need receivers too, see below (Wireless Cards/USB) |
$99 |
| Wireless Cards/USB |
Each PC requires either a USB wireless receiver or one that you have to install in your computer (best done by a technician or Red Shift installer). A 2 PC network would require 2 receivers in addition to the wireless router. |
$75 |
| DSL Router |
You will need this if you do not have enough IPs for each PC that you wish to network and you do not wish to buy extra IPs. The router has 4 ports built in for you to use to run wires to additional PCs. This unit will work with network wires or with the powerline adapters. If you wish to do this without powerline or wires you will want the wireless router listed above instead. |
