Following is a brief description on setting various
popular email clients to use SMTP AUTHentication.

  • Outlook 2000
  • Outlook Express 4.0 and 5.0 (Mac)
  • Netscape Communicator 4.5 - 4.75 (Windows/MacOS/Unix)
  • Outlook 2000

To begin, find the "Services" option
in the "Tools" menu and select it
    ...

Next, from the "Services" tab, select the
"Internet Email" service and click OK . . .

From the "Servers" tab, select the option labeled
    "My server requires authentication"
and click the "Settings" button . . .

Select the option to "Use same settings as my
incoming mail server" and click OK. You're done.

Outlook Express 4.0 and 5.0 (Mac)

The Macintosh version of Outlook Express
(4.01 and earlier) does not appear to support
SMTP AUTH at all. But version 5.0 does.

    Netscape Communicator 4.5 - 4.75  (Windows/MacOS/Unix)

Netscape Communicator 4.5 and higher should automatically use SMTP AUTH if it is advertised by the server. You will need to set the default username to use when authenticating. You can do this by following these steps...
First select "Preferences" from the "Edit" menu...

Next, select the "Mail Servers" category and
enter your Username in the space labeled
    "Outgoing mail server user name".

    Now click OK. That's it.
