Can I Start Roots Study This Year?
You can start roots study with students of nearly any age. The student's age will influence your choice of book (Vocabulary Vine or Science Roots) and study method (as-written or with-modifications).
To decide where to dive in, find your student's level on this chart. The first section is for younger students, the second section is for older students who have not yet studied basic roots, and the third section is for older students who have studied basic roots. Consider your two options, "Best Plan" and "Second Best" for each level.
This chart assumes you'll take biology in 9th grade. If you start biology in a different year, adjust the chart so you'll finish Science Roots in the year you take biology.

Elementary Students If you start when student is in Best Plan Second Best 2nd grade Wait Casually introduce the roots orally, discuss their use in known words, play games 3rd grade Wait one more year Use Vine with hints as needed, especially in logic-driven tasks 4th or 5th grade Student uses Vine independently and finishes in a year Spread Vine over two years
Sixth Grade & Up;
Student has NOT studied basic roots

Then start Science Roots 2-Year Plan. Try to cover the 63 First-Year roots by the end of the year. Next year cover the 2nd-Year list of 60 biology-specific roots. Start the Science Roots 2-year plan, and save Vine for 10th grade. Vine would be helpful for Science Roots, but it's not required. 9th grade Cover Science Roots in one year. Note: it's too late to start the 2-year plan. You need to FINISH Science Roots in your biology year. Save Vocabulary Vine for next year. Try to complete it before SAT's. Same as Best Plan 10th-12th grade Complete Vocabulary Vine. Modify some study steps to suit your more-mature learning style. After Vine, cover Science Roots if you are considering a life science field (medical, veterinary, marine biology, etc.).
Sixth Grade & Up;
Student HAS STUDIED basic roots

Note: Some roots workbooks provide a good introduction to roots but not mastery. If your 6th or 7th grader has been exposed to roots but needs some review, use Vocabulary Vine before you start the Science Roots 2-Year Plan in 8th grade.
